Doyle Brunson, Iconic Poker Figure, Celebrated with Lifetime Achievement Award
Doyle Brunson, fondly known as the Godfather of Poker, continues to add accolades to his illustrious career with a new honor: he has been awarded Card Player Magazine's first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award. This recognition further cements his status as a legendary figure in the world of poker.
The award ceremony took place on February 15, 2006, at the Henry Fonda Music Box Theater in Old Hollywood. Hosted by Bodog as part of Card Player Magazine's Player of the Year Awards, the event celebrated Brunson's monumental impact on poker. Men Nguyen was named Player of the Year, and other outstanding players were also honored:
- People's Choice Award for Favorite Player: Daniel "Kid Poker" Negreanu
- Best Celebrity Player: Jennifer Tilly
- Best No-Limit Player: Phil Ivey
- Most Underrated Player: Allen Cunningham
- Best Heads Up Player: Phil Ivey
- Best Mixed Game Player: Chip Reese
- Best Female Player: Jennifer Harman
- Most Entertaining Player: Mike Matusow
- Most Feared Player: Phil Ivey
- Breakthrough Player: Michael Gracz
- Best Cash Game Player: Chip Reese
- Poker Ambassador: Mike Sexton
- Card Player Freeroll Champion: Jim Coca
Notably, Doyle's Room's own Todd Brunson, Doyle's son, was a nominee for Best Heads Up Player, alongside the likes of poker brat Phil Hellmuth. Brunson himself was also in the running for Poker Ambassador, with Daniel Negreanu as another nominee.
Brunson, a Las Vegas native and esteemed spokesman for Doyle's Room, was the first to win $1 million in a poker tournament. At the time of the award, he held 10 World Series of Poker bracelets?"a number that may well have increased since then.
The event was hosted by Brad Garrett from "Everybody Loves Raymond," with celebrity guests including "Boston" Rob and Amber Mariano from "Survivor," Don Felder of the Eagles, Christopher Masterson from "Malcolm in the Middle," Danny Masterson and Laura Prepon from "That '70s Show," and Gilby Clarke, formerly of Guns and Roses.
In his acceptance speech, Brunson offered humble advice: "In life as in poker, you have tough breaks. But you have to play with the hands you're dealt. That is what I try to do, and that is what I encourage you to do."
Despite Men "The Master" Nguyen taking the Player of the Year title, Brunson had impressive achievements in 2005, including:
- 3rd place at the 4th Annual 5-Diamond World Poker Classic No-Limit Hold'em Championship ($563,485)
- 1st place at the 36th Annual World Series of Poker No-Limit Hold'em Short Handed event ($367,500)
- 3rd place at the 3rd Annual 5-Star World Poker Classic ($60,000)
Doyle's Room, named in his honor, represents the pinnacle of service, features, and gameplay, showcasing the excellence that Brunson himself embodies. Truly, it takes a lifetime of achievement to create something that remarkable.
