Some people possess a unique range of motion due to elongated joint capsules, a natural gift. While you and I might need to work harder, the rewards of yoga practice remain accessible to all.
Yoga encompasses many dimensions, and Asanas represent just one aspect. Many highly flexible students often struggle with other elements of yoga, such as meditation, balancing, Pranayama, or understanding yogic philosophy.
Regrettably, I've witnessed many promising yoga students abandon their practice due to a competitive mindset. They perceive themselves as competing with fellow students and even their instructors.
Remember, yoga means "union." In essence, it is the union of mind, body, and spirit. While there are numerous interpretations of this union, competition doesn't align with any of them.
Competition fuels the ego, which is just a fragment of your personality. The ego resists unity, striving for its own survival, serving as a social mask that shies away from sharing.
Next time you find yourself feeling envious of a fellow student or teacher, remember that this isn't true union. In fact, it might hinder your journey toward unity and the many other benefits yoga can bring to your life.
