Maybe Bikram is Right?
I recently found myself with the rare opportunity to watch a bit of television, and fate led me to Bikram Choudhury's interview on "60 Minutes." My wife, Marie, and I rarely get to watch TV at that hour since we’re usually busy closing up our wellness center. So, this was a pleasant surprise.
Our center doesn’t host 105-degree Bikram or hot yoga classes, but we’re familiar with Bikram’s methods and his wife, Rajashree Choudhury, a five-time winner of the All-India Yoga Championship. Personally, I’m not a devoted Bikram fan, yet I find him entertaining, much like a comedy routine from Jerry Seinfeld or Ray Romano. Despite the skepticism surrounding him, he certainly has a point.
During his interview, Bikram remarked, “I don’t sell cheesecake, you know that.” This encapsulates his no-nonsense approach. Anyone attending a Bikram yoga class knows they’re signing up for something intense?"after all, how can you miss 105 degrees Fahrenheit?
America is a nation of extremes, with only about 10% of the population exercising regularly. Another 35% fluctuate with the seasons, trends, or whims. Meanwhile, a staggering 55% seem to have sworn off exercise altogether. Perhaps a more assertive approach, like Bikram's, is what some need to get moving.
Bikram’s drill-sergeant persona might just appeal to those who require a little tough love to appreciate yoga. He’s become the “Guru of the Stars” and knows a thing or two about public relations. Credit is due where it’s deserved.
If you’re passionate about yoga and missed this striking interview, try to catch a rerun. It seems there’s a widespread desire for disciplined yet caring instructors in yoga. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to organize the Extremely Hot Navy Seals Power Yoga Boot Camp.
