Benefits of Chair Yoga: Part 2
Correcting poor posture and alignment is a gradual process, much like the saying, "Rome wasn’t built in a day." It takes years to develop poor alignment, so it can't be fixed overnight. A more fitting analogy might be, "The Leaning Tower of Pisa can't be straightened in a week."
However, you can make significant improvements to posture through Chair Yoga exercises and daily posture awareness. In my classes, I refer to this awareness as "homework." While it often brings a smile to my students, they understand that class time is for learning and practicing Chair Yoga together.
The time between classes is when you apply these principles to your everyday life. While Chair Yoga isn't a cure-all, it can enhance many aspects of your life. Practicing your "homework" distinguishes those with remarkable success from those with modest improvements.
What is Posture Awareness?
Posture awareness involves being mindful of your posture daily. Start by observing your side profile in a mirror and in photos. Examine your spine from top to bottom. Do you notice slumping, a forward tilt of the neck, or overly pronounced curves? Your spine should be relatively straight during various activities like standing, walking, reading, eating, sitting, lying, and typing. Make a conscious effort to keep your head and back aligned.
We all remember a teacher telling us to "keep your back straight," and now we realize they were right. Begin adjusting your spinal alignment now, and do so whenever you remember.
Consider attending workshops on Chiropractic and Orthopedic medicine to further educate yourself about your body and spine. These workshops are often available at local senior centers, and they are typically free. It's a great opportunity for fact-finding and learning more about your choices.
The alignment and posture principles you learn in Chair Yoga can be as straightforward as distinguishing between pain and comfort. By integrating these practices into your life, you’ll be on your way to better posture and overall well-being.
