The Diet Bore
Title:
The Diet BoreSummary:
Everyone knows a diet bore: they seem to be omnipresent in offices, social groups, and gatherings. Often female, they have an intense desire to share their weight loss journeys and dietary knowledge with everyone, even if unsolicited.Article:
We all know a diet bore. They show up in every office, social group, and at every get-together. Typically, they're women?"though men also lose weight, they don't usually share their experiences quite as fervently. Perhaps it stems from a natural inclination to inspire change in others.
The diet bore can recite the calorie counts of every bite you take and happily informs you of them. They delve into lengthy discussions on the benefits and drawbacks of sugar, salt, protein, and carbs. Their expertise extends to the differences between monounsaturated and saturated fats, trans fats, and essential fats, which they explain tirelessly. They’re convinced they know what’s best for you and warn about what dreadful outcomes await if you indulge in your meal.
In restaurants, they make you squirm as they grill the waitstaff on how dishes are prepared. They insist on special dietary substitutions and modify their orders extensively, only to complain later that the food lacks flavor. With a tote full of salt substitutes, sugar alternatives, food value guides, and a calculator, they loudly tally the calories and carbs consumed by everyone at the table.
Ironically, diet bores often cause more people to give up on dieting than fast food mascots ever could. Their monotonous approach makes the whole concept of weight loss unappealing.
As we savor our spaghetti and meatballs with garlic toast, we find solace in the fact that, despite their extensive knowledge and public efforts to control their weight, the diet bore often remains slightly heavier than they aim to be.
Perhaps they bore themselves too.
