The Ways People Conceal Their Stutter
Summary:
My name is Steve Hill, and I began stuttering at the age of four, which impacted my life for the next eighteen years. Today, at thirty-two, I've been fluent for about a decade. In this article, I explore the techniques people use to mask their stutter. Some are so adept that even their closest friends and family might not realize they stutter at all.
---
I developed a stutter at four, affecting me for eighteen years. Now fluent at thirty-two, I want to share how people hide their stuttering. Some succeed so well that their loved ones remain unaware.
Drawing from my experiences, I’ll highlight strategies stutterers often use.
In Restaurants:
Ordering food becomes a challenge. While fluent diners choose based on preference, I, and many others, select what we can confidently pronounce. Words starting with certain letters, like "b", are particularly daunting. For instance, instead of braised steak, I'd avoid anything starting with "b".
Once, at sixteen, I went to an Indian restaurant with friends. Craving curry, I struggled with their names: chicken balti, madras, lamb pasanda?"all difficult for me. Ultimately, I settled for scampi and chips.
Finding Alternative Words:
When asked a question requiring difficult words, I’d quickly think of alternatives. Over time, I mastered this skill, though I yearned for the day I could speak freely without substituting words.
Avoiding Difficult Names:
My brother’s name, Gavin, posed a challenge. On the phone, if his wife answered, I’d struggle. To cope, I’d ask for “her husband” rather than use his name. She found it amusing, but I had my reasons.
Daily Struggles:
Concealing my stutter was exhausting. Choosing foods and drinks or thinking of synonym alternatives was mentally taxing. This constant effort led to stress and even premature gray hair at twenty-one.
Happily, I can now say any word I wish?"even “balti”!
