The Truth About Hypnotherapy

Exploring Hypnotherapy with Sheri O. Zampelli, M.S., CCH

Interviewed by Laura M. Turner, CHHP

I must confess, I knew very little about hypnotherapy, especially for weight loss, until I witnessed its remarkable results. To learn more, I interviewed Sheri O. Zampelli, a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, weight loss coach, and creator of Donate Your Weight.

What is the Background of Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy dates back to 1776 and has fluctuated in popularity over the years. Sigmund Freud used hypnosis in his practice, which influenced his psychoanalytic theories. Today, many therapists and doctors use hypnosis to help clients manage pain, break habits, and resolve psychological issues.

How Did You Get Involved in Hypnotherapy?

My journey began when I struggled with weight and eating. I visited Dr. Nancy Bonus, who offered a "non-diet weight loss program" through what she called 'visualization.' Many programs labeled as 'visualization' actually use hypnosis techniques. The power of hypnosis lies not in merely visualizing an outcome but in doing so from a deep, relaxed, trance-like state. This approach helps bypass the analytical mind, allowing for harmony between your conscious and subconscious thoughts.

Why Choose Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss?

Hypnotherapy targets the impulsive, reward-seeking part of the brain, the amygdala, which craves immediate gratification. By reprogramming this area, you can focus on benefits like improved health and fitting into smaller clothes, aligning your subconscious with your weight loss goals.

What Does a Private Session Involve?

Private sessions range from $75 to $300 an hour. I charge $150 per session, but prefer six-session packages for $700. I offer phone coaching and create personalized hypnosis CDs after working with clients for about three weeks. Weight and eating issues are complex, often rooted in emotional triggers and self-esteem. Solving them usually requires a commitment to changing your relationship with food and yourself.

Can You Benefit From Hypnotherapy on Your Own?

Absolutely. Hypnosis CDs can help with motivation and breaking habits. A self-motivated individual without a history of trauma may find a CD sufficient. However, if the CD loses effectiveness, it might be time to consult a professional to overcome any roadblocks. Self-sabotage can hinder hypnosis effectiveness, especially if underlying beliefs need to be addressed. My book, "From Sabotage to Success," offers tools to overcome such challenges.

Hypnotherapy presents a unique approach to weight loss, focusing on emotional and subconscious change. With commitment and guidance, it can lead to lasting transformation.
