All forms technically qualify as computer crimes and are subject to legal consequences. Unfortunately, unlike traditional bullying, cyber-bullying is harder to trace due to perpetrators' ability to remain anonymous, use false identities, or frequently change online personas.
A 2005 study highlighted various forms of cyber-bullying, including sending derogatory or threatening messages, sharing private information, impersonating someone to harm their image, or deliberately excluding someone from online groups. These acts commonly occur through emails, instant messaging, text messages, blogs, chat rooms, and other digital platforms.
Traditional bullying is distressing in itself, but cyber-bullying can be even more frightening as it can happen at any time, day or night, reaching a vast audience quickly. With camera phones, perpetrators can capture compromising images and share them online on platforms like YouTube or as email attachments, amplifying the victim's humiliation and stress.
Research indicates that cyber-bullying is more prevalent among girls, both as victims and perpetrators, due to the crime's passive-aggressive nature. Unlike boys, who might express aggression physically, girls often face societal pressures against doing so. While non-physical, cyber-bullying can be perpetrated regardless of the size or age difference between individuals, relying instead on technological expertise. Thus, a tech-savvy individual could bully someone physically stronger or older than themselves.
Ignoring cyber-bullying is not a viable solution for everyone, as online defamatory content can be challenging to remove and widely accessible. Victims might resort to changing their email or phone number, but the best course of action is to report the incident to an adult, providing evidence such as stored messages, emails, or videos documenting the harassment.
