Spinal Cord Injury: A New Chapter
Summary:
Explore the reflections of a patient facing life after a spinal cord injury.
---
When discussing a spinal cord injury, we're not talking about death but about living beyond the injury. The title of this article reflects how many individuals initially react to the news of paralysis, wheelchairs, and the reality of never walking again. It's common for thoughts to turn to despair.
When I woke up after three days in a coma, I was told about my accident. I remember the look on the doctor’s face as he explained that my spine was broken in three places. Bone fragments had severed my spinal cord, leaving me paralyzed from the chest down (T-4 level). It was then that I first wished I hadn't survived.
Fast forward twenty-two years, and I’ve lived two decades with a wheelchair as my companion. My spinal cord remains severed, but I’ve adapted. I've owned multiple wheelchairs: one for basketball, another for tennis, and an everyday chair. Over the years, I've probably gone through nearly ten different chairs. Along with them come the catheters, baclofen, leg bags, and all the essentials needed for living with paralysis?"all stemming from one car accident.
Would I have preferred not to exist in this "afterlife"? It's hard to say without experiencing the alternative. However, I can confidently share that life after a spinal cord injury can be rewarding and fulfilling if you choose to see it that way.
