Sleep is an active process where the brain remains busy as the body rests. Insomnia, on the other hand, is characterized by trouble falling asleep or disruptions in sleep patterns, often impacting daily functioning.

The Five Stages of Sleep
1. Stage 1: Light Sleep

- Eye movement stops, brain waves slow, with bursts of activity called sleep spindles.
3. Stage 3: Transition to Deep Sleep
- Introduction of delta waves, slow brainwaves interspersed with fast waves.
4. Stage 4: Deep Sleep
- Dominated by delta waves, no eye movement or muscle activity. Difficult to wake. Children may experience bedwetting, night terrors, or sleepwalking here.
5. REM Sleep: Dream Stage
- Rapid eye movement, increased heart rate, and faster, irregular breathing. Muscles temporarily paralyzed.
These stages cycle every 90 to 110 minutes. Early cycles feature longer deep sleep phases, but as the night progresses, REM duration increases.
Sleep Cycles
Throughout the night, sleep progresses through these cycles. By morning, most time is spent in stages 1, 2, and REM. On average, adults spend 50% of sleep in stage 2, 20% in REM, and 30% in other stages. In contrast, infants spend about 50% of their sleep in REM.
Influences on Sleep
Neurotransmitter signals in the brain regulate sleep and wakefulness. Changes in these signals, due to diet or medication, can affect sleep quality. Caffeine and weight loss pills, for instance, can cause insomnia by stimulating brain activity. Many people use over-the-counter sleeping pills or alcohol to induce sleep. However, alcohol can lead to lighter sleep and disrupt the essential REM stage.
Understanding these dynamics can help manage and improve sleep quality, reducing the impact of insomnia.
