Individuals with this condition experience hair loss starting in childhood, which worsens with age, especially around the scalp.
The study revealed that Hypotrichosis simplex is caused by a genetic abnormality that prevents certain receptor structures on hair follicle cells from forming correctly. These previously unknown receptors are essential for hair growth.
Dr. Markus Nöthen, head of Genetic Medicine at Bonn University's Life & Brain Centre, highlighted that the faulty receptor structure belongs to a group known as G-protein-coupled receptors. This discovery is promising, as these receptors are ideal targets for drug treatments. The team also identified a natural messenger that binds to the receptor in hair follicles.
