Mosquitoes: Small But Dangerous
Mosquitoes may be tiny?"often smaller than a shirt button?"but they carry significant health risks. With over 200 species present in North America, some mosquitoes are capable of transmitting serious viruses like West Nile, which can cause encephalitis, or brain swelling.
Since the West Nile virus's discovery in New York in 1999, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports over 19,500 U.S. cases, resulting in more than 750 deaths. Severe symptoms include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, disorientation, convulsions, vision loss, and paralysis, and the disease can even be fatal.
Globally, mosquitoes transmit diseases like malaria, elephantiasis, and yellow and dengue fevers, causing major health challenges.
"Mosquitoes are not just dangerous?"they're also a common nuisance in American homes," says Frank Meek, entomologist and Technical Director for Orkin, Inc. "Protecting yourself and your family is crucial, especially during peak activity in summer and early fall."
Fortunately, a survey by Orkin, Inc. shows that 90% of Americans recognize mosquitoes' ability to spread disease. Here are some proactive steps to protect your home and family:
- Apply an EPA-approved insect repellent to clothing and exposed skin when outdoors.
- During peak biting hours from dusk to dawn, wear long sleeves and pants or consider staying indoors.
- Ensure window and door screens fit well and are free of holes.
- Remove standing water where mosquitoes breed, such as in flowerpots, buckets, tire swings, and children's wading pools. Regularly change water in pet dishes and birdbaths.
While controlling mosquito populations can be challenging, Orkin offers professional services to help protect against these pests.
