Kettlebells and Chiropractic: A Winning Combination
Introduction
For the past 14 years as a chiropractor, I've found an outstanding tool for enhancing back strength and overall health: kettlebells. Initially intimidating, I discovered their benefits after facing a personal injury.
From Doctor to Patient
Throughout high school and college, I excelled in sports like volleyball, softball, and basketball, which led me to become a chiropractor. I believed in the importance of a strong, well-aligned body. Despite years without issues, around five years ago, while adjusting a large patient, I injured my back. It felt like hitting a wall of marble, and I knew I was in trouble.
A Struggle with Traditional Treatments
I tried everything?"stretching, massage, chiropractic care, physical therapy, even acupuncture. Despite frequent treatments, my recovery stalled. Sneezing could trigger spasms, and a wrong move in bed meant wearing a back brace for days. This pain jeopardized my career; who would trust a chiropractor with an injured back? Desperate, I masked my pain from my patients.
Seeking a solution, I hired a personal trainer, a former NFL player. After six months, although I gained some strength, my back pain persisted and worsened. A mere sneeze could leave me bedridden.
Embracing a New Approach
Around this time, I discovered Pavel Tsatsouline’s book, Beyond Stretching. The innovative stretches intrigued me and caught the interest of my physical therapy colleagues. I believed Pavel’s methods could hold the key to restoring my health and saving my practice.
Living near Seattle, I attended Pavel’s classes. I was impressed by the stretches and my diminishing pain. Inspired, I recommended his seminars to patients and colleagues. I frequently brought my most acute patients to his events, convinced they'd benefit.
Pavel suggested kettlebell training, intimidating at first, but I was intrigued. After purchasing a kettlebell, it remained mostly unused?"I found it exhausting. It was a hit to my ego as an athlete.
A Life-Changing Demonstration
In October 2004, I attended another seminar, including a kettlebell demonstration by Dave Werner, RKC. His story of overcoming severe lower back pain was inspiring. Seeing his transformation motivated me to retry kettlebells, not just for me but my patients.
I hired Dave as a trainer. Remarkably, after a month of training, I sneezed?"without pain?"for the first time in years. It was miraculous. Encouraged, I intensified my training and decided to attend the April 2005 RKC, a demanding three-day event. My fitness improved, my back pain vanished, and I survived the intense training with only general muscle soreness, never back issues. I got my life back!
Helping Patients with Kettlebells
Back from training, I applied kettlebell techniques with one of my most severe back injury patients. Afraid to move due to spasms, she started slowly with a 4 Kg bell. Her strength improved, and within weeks, her spinal stability increased. We reduced her chiropractic visits as she progressed. After five weeks, she could vacuum her house?"something she'd been unable to do for years. It was life-changing for her.
Using a larger 8 Kg bell, her confidence and range of motion expanded. Kettlebells offered gradual progress, reducing fear of spasms. The transformation in patients was astounding.
Kettlebells: The Missing Ingredient?
Kettlebells have demonstrated improvements beyond back stability. One colleague saw relief from asthma, another from wrist and knee pain. I’m in the best shape of my life, training individuals and groups several nights each week.
I believe kettlebells are essential for recovery training. Many suffer from back pain, unable to enjoy life, but kettlebells can help. Starting slow is key, easing both physical and mental barriers. At 39, I feel better than in my twenties. Thanks to Pavel, I look forward to future improvements.
