Escape to Solitude
In our fast-paced world, who hasn’t dreamed of escaping from it all? Back in March/April 1978, an intriguing story from www.motherearthnews.com captured the imagination of many. It featured a couple who acquired McLeod's Island, a serene 90-acre retreat off the coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.
On this island, they managed a few animals, minimized grocery expenses, and relied heavily on the land for sustenance. However, island life was not without its trials:
“The sea is ‘restless’ for a reason, transforming a calm bay into a tumult of waves and currents in moments. We’ve seen our bay thaw and refreeze completely within hours on a December day.
Winters here are unpredictable. In 1976, persistent thaws left the bay filled with slush?"too solid for a boat, yet too treacherous for even a fox. We were isolated for three months, from January through March. By contrast, last winter’s extreme cold solidified the bay, allowing us to trek to the mainland for mail and supplies whenever needed.”
While the digital age allows many of us to work remotely, this couple didn’t have such a convenience. Unfortunately, their current whereabouts are unknown. Perhaps they embraced the tides of adventure.
Life often requires sacrifices, some more significant than others. For now, owning an island remains a distant dream for me.
