Focus on Independence Offers New Vision to Quadriplegics
In Los Angeles, two prominent refractive surgeons have launched a transformative initiative called Focus on Independence. This program provides free LASIK or vision correction surgery to quadriplegics, significantly enhancing their independence.
Dr. Robert K. Maloney from Los Angeles and Dr. Daniel Durrie from Kansas City have recruited about 40 surgeons nationwide to offer this service. It’s aimed at individuals over 18 who have experienced spinal cord injuries, resulting in the loss of use of their hands and/or arms, making it challenging to manage glasses or contacts independently.
Dr. Maloney highlights the constant inconvenience glasses pose for quadriplegic patients. "Focus on Independence is designed to ease daily life," he explains.
For quadriplegics, glasses are not just inconvenient; they can be highly restrictive. Simple activities, such as a bump while moving a wheelchair or a pet jumping in their lap, can dislodge their glasses, requiring assistance to reposition them.
Marta Johansen from Encino, California, who became quadriplegic following a car accident over two decades ago, underwent LASIK surgery at the Maloney Vision Institute in May. She shared, "Not having to wear glasses is one less thing I need help with."
LASIK surgeons across the country are volunteering their time and expertise for this program. Refractive surgeons interested in participating can reach out to the Maloney Vision Institute.
"Our aim is to ensure that every spinal cord injury patient in the U.S. has access to an experienced LASIK surgeon within 100 miles," says Dr. Maloney.
The Focus on Independence program is gaining traction, fueled by recent media coverage. Quadriplegics who believe they qualify are encouraged to contact the Maloney Vision Institute for an evaluation.
Dr. Maloney emphasizes the importance of spreading awareness about this service to spinal cord injury patients nationwide. Participating surgeons express immense satisfaction in helping patients regain some independence.
