Coping With Hearing Loss

Introduction

Losing my hearing turned out to be one of the most transformative events in my life. It led to the publication of my first novel and a successful career as a best-selling author. But accepting that I needed a hearing aid was a journey in itself.

Embracing Challenges

My parents instilled in me a belief that I could overcome any challenge, including hearing loss. My mother's encouraging words, "Yes, you can," always resonated with me, especially during moments of doubt.

The Beginning of Hearing Loss

I was born with mild hearing loss, but it wasn't until my senior year in college that it worsened significantly. I remember the first time I realized something was wrong. My roommate picked up the phone, and I hadn't heard it ring. The embarrassment and confusion kept me from speaking up initially.

Late-deafened individuals often recall specific moments when they stopped hearing pivotal sounds, such as telephones or doorbells, much like recalling historic events.

Struggling Without a Hearing Aid

As my hearing deteriorated, I resisted getting a hearing aid out of vanity. In college, I coped by sitting at the front of the classroom, trying to read lips, and asking people to repeat themselves. However, by graduate school, it was clear that I needed assistance. Initially, I delayed the decision, letting my hair grow to conceal the bulky device. But eventually, I purchased a hearing aid, realizing how crucial it was for my success.

The Advantage of Modern Hearing Aids

Thankfully, hearing aids improved over time. While the early models simply amplified sound, newer digital and programmable aids offered customized solutions for different types of hearing loss. These advancements allowed me to fine-tune frequencies to match my needs, making a huge difference.

A New Beginning

With my hearing aid, I could concentrate on important aspects of my life?"like my education and career?"and finally pursue my dream of writing a novel. I didn’t realize it at the time, but the hearing aid was the key that unlocked my future.

Achieving Dreams

Despite the challenges, I discovered that anyone can write, regardless of hearing ability. Determined to show that my hearing loss wouldn’t hold me back, I wrote my first novel, published in 1994. Writing went from a hobby to a full-time profession. By 2005, I'd published five novels and was working on a nonfiction photo-essay scheduled for release in 2007.

Reflecting on my journey, losing my hearing ironically became one of the best things that happened to me. Without it, I might have remained an editor, still dreaming of becoming a novelist. Instead, I found my true calling and achieved my dreams.
