Beer and Fitness: Can You Drink Beer and Stay Fit?
This week, I received an intriguing question about drinking beer and staying fit. A former Navy Radioman noticed his growing gut since retirement and wondered if ditching beer could help him slim down. He enjoys 2-4 beers daily and has stopped exercising. It turns out, moderate beer consumption can be part of a healthy lifestyle, so I decided to explore what "moderate" really means and share some basics about calories and exercise. Interestingly, his problem isn't necessarily a "beer belly" but more of an "inactivity belly." Yes, you can enjoy beer and still stay fit.
Over 90 million Americans love drinking beer! Numerous studies, including ones from the New England Journal of Medicine, show that moderate alcohol consumption, including beer, can be healthy. It can lower the risk of high cholesterol, heart disease, some cancers, and even impotence.
However, excess is always unhealthy. "Moderation" typically means 1-2 beers a day, according to most doctors. And no, you can't save up and drink 10-12 beers on a weekend! That’s not moderation. There’s even a US Beer Drinking Team promoting moderation, responsibility, and healthy living.
A single beer has over 100 calories, similar to a chocolate chip cookie. Four beers equal the calories in a Big Mac. To lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume, including those from your daily meals. Even the lightest beers contain empty calories that aren't good if not countered with exercise. Many Americans struggle with the stereotype of the "beer belly"?"or what I call the "inactivity belly."
An "inactivity" belly results from eating more than your body burns through activity. To lose it, you need to consume fewer calories than you expend through exercise.
Calories In < Calories Out = Weight Loss
Incorporating 20-30 minutes of exercise daily can make your 1-2 beer consumption negligible. To shed that beer belly, carefully watch what you eat and drink, hydrate with 2-4 quarts of water daily, and make fitness a priority. Here are a couple of workouts to help you burn calories:
Workout #1: Full-Body Calorie Burner
- Repeat 3-5 times:- Walk, run, or bike for 5 minutes
- Squats ?" 20 reps
- Push-ups ?" 10-20 reps
- Sit-ups or crunches ?" 20 reps
Workout #2: High-Calorie Burn
- Swimming and elliptical training (cross-country skiing) are top calorie burners (up to 1000 calories/hour):- Swim nonstop for 20-30 minutes
- Elliptical glide for 20-30 minutes
There’s no reason you can't have "six-pack abs" while enjoying a six-pack weekly. Excessive drinking isn’t advised, but combining moderate beer drinking with healthy eating and daily exercise can help you achieve your health goals.
