Article Body

What do people call you? Servants of the Almighty, followers of Christ, disciples of Jesus?"these names describe one group: Christians. You might struggle to embody the faith you profess, much like a soldier striving to meet the ideals of their commander. The goal is to become like Jesus?"nothing more, nothing less.

But here's where the challenge arises. Despite any motivation the military might provide, achieving your ultimate goal can feel daunting. You've tried everything, yet it seems impossible, even absurd. This can lead to a sense of inaction, driven by the belief that it's beyond reach.

If this resonates with you, you may be experiencing performance anxiety. This upsetting mix of fear, worry, and apprehension can strip away the joy of aligning with Christ's character. Biblically, humans are created in God's image?"not in physical appearance, but in essence. Therefore, striving for godliness shouldn't be problematic because it's inherent. However, chronic fear and anxiety stemming from misconceptions won’t help you reach your goals.

Paul, one of the early apostles, knew performance anxiety well. He acknowledged having a “thorn in the flesh,” symbolizing his struggles and overwhelming fears. Despite feeling he could never fully be like Jesus, he chose to persevere and suffer for Christ. Paul faced and overcame fear and anxiety in his journey of faith.

He was shipwrecked multiple times, jailed, and stoned like a criminal for his beliefs. Yet, he overcame fear and anxiety by considering himself a prisoner for Christ, no longer living for his own sake. With this mindset, no threat or obstacle could deter him, believing nothing could further enslave him.

Even with numerous hurdles, Paul confidently declared, "Imitate me as I imitate Christ."

Feeling inadequate is natural when compared to the image of Jesus. However, we are urged to live like Christ, no matter how challenging it may be. Keep pushing towards the goal. It’s undeniably tough, but, as Paul said, “I am not telling you this because I’ve achieved perfection. By God's grace, I press on towards the prize.”
