Americans Encouraged to Set Cholesterol Goals for a Health Makeover
Many people eagerly tackle home improvement projects, but when it comes to enhancing health, Americans often fall short. About 38 million in the U.S. have high LDL ("bad") cholesterol, a major risk for heart disease and stroke. A recent national survey highlights a lack of knowledge in effectively managing cholesterol levels.
To address this, WomenHeart and the Association of Black Cardiologists have partnered with AstraZeneca to launch the GOAL Standard campaign. This initiative aims to raise awareness about cholesterol's dangers and emphasize the importance of having specific cholesterol targets.
Paul DiMeo, known from ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," joins the effort to inspire people to collaborate with healthcare providers, set cholesterol goals, and create plans to achieve and maintain those goals.
DiMeo describes managing cholesterol like a home makeover: "You need a clear goal, a blueprint, and dedication to follow through," he shares. After discovering his high cholesterol, DiMeo worked with his doctor to reach and maintain his target, emphasizing the commitment required.
Despite guidelines from The National Cholesterol Education Program, a survey reveals that 60% of those on cholesterol-lowering statins are unaware of their target numbers. Additionally, 69% do not discuss cholesterol-lowering strategies with their doctors, and 31% overlook how to maintain their cholesterol levels.
Around 40% of adults, including those on statins, wish for more in-depth discussions with healthcare professionals about cholesterol management.
Dr. Noel Bairey Merz from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center stresses the importance of open communication with doctors about treatment options and targets. “Patients must follow personalized plans for healthy living to manage LDL levels effectively,” she emphasizes.
Through the GOAL Standard, the focus is on empowering patients to take charge of their health by understanding and achieving their cholesterol goals.
