The journey to achieving fitness and managing weight can often feel daunting. Besides the usual challenges, there are often additional hurdles like health issues, time constraints, and finding motivation. Even seasoned exercisers face new barriers. So, how do we navigate these challenges effectively?

According to Tom Turner, the executive liaison for the Spina Bifida Association, it's all about perspective.

Embarking on a fitness journey can be overwhelming, with obstacles such as health issues and time management. Even if you're an experienced exerciser, new challenges arise. How do we tackle them?

Tom Turner, who has been paralyzed from the waist down since birth, offers insight. At 35, he trains three times a week and believes that no mountain is too high to climb. His approach to overcoming fitness barriers boils down to three key principles, which he shared with me during our conversation.

Principle #1: Embrace the Fear

"Train your mind to believe no mountain is too high or goal too difficult," Tom advises. The first step is to identify and confront your fears. Are you afraid you'll never get back in shape? Do past injuries intimidate you? Visualize the person you want to be and trust your body’s ability to transform. Your body is capable of healing itself; your job is to listen and trust it.

Reflect: What is your body telling you?

Principle #2: Trust Your Intuition

Breaking through barriers requires listening to your inner voice. While the opinions of others can be helpful, ultimate decisions come from within. Trusting your instincts can shift your mindset and elevate your awareness.

Tom didn’t let his wheelchair define him. He recognized his boundaries and pushed them, achieving more reps or greater endurance over time. Small steps consistently lead to big achievements.

Principle #3: Resist Complacency

When asked about fear, Tom shared, "After 19 operations, I've come to terms with fear. Realizing that death is a part of the divine plan is liberating. Instead of fearing it, I've chosen how to live."

Tom’s perspective is a reminder of Dylan Thomas’s words: "Do not go gentle into that good night." A positive attitude is crucial. Don’t let fear keep you from truly living. Ask yourself: What fears hold you back? Start overcoming them today.

Life Beyond Boundaries

Once you've faced your fears and expanded your boundaries, what’s next? Tom suggests, "Find a new mountain to climb. It's what makes life exciting." He acknowledges there will be days for rest and reflection, but even then, he plans his next goals.

Author's Note: In my personal journey beyond limitations, I've chosen Tom as my role model (fortunately, he's my brother). We often seek inspiration from media, but real heroes surround us. Look around; learn from those who inspire you. Set goals and take action to enjoy a healthier life.

Choose someone you admire, set goals, and climb those mountains! Embrace the process and live fully.
