Improving Eating Habits Can Be Easier Than You Think

Americans are increasingly aware of the need to improve their eating habits. Many are exploring ways to reduce fat, sugar, and carbs to enhance their overall health.

A recent survey by Opinion Research shows that 86% of Americans acknowledge the need for dietary changes to boost their well-being. Despite this, 63% still find it challenging to eat healthier. The main hurdles include the fear of losing enjoyment of favorite foods (70%), the belief that healthy eating is time-consuming (59%), and concerns about compromising taste (51%).

"People are eager for advice and solutions to improve their eating habits and live healthier, longer lives," says Crystal Harrell, Ph.D., from the Procter & Gamble Health Sciences Institute. Although many aspire to better health, breaking everyday habits and giving up beloved foods can be tough.

According to Harrell, healthy eating is more accessible than most realize. Simple steps in grocery shopping or drive-thru choices can lead to healthier eating without sacrificing time, flavor, or enjoyment.

One effective approach is increasing fiber intake. Research suggests fiber can help prevent various health conditions, yet 95% of Americans do not meet their daily fiber needs. The National Fiber Council recommends a daily intake of 32 grams of fiber. However, Columbia University reports that the average intake is only 10 to 15 grams ?" less than half the recommended amount.

Dietitian and chef Jackie Newgent offers the following tips for easily adding more fiber to your diet:

- Pizza Upgrade: Skip the sausage or pepperoni and opt for a "salad" pizza with vegetables like artichokes, onions, and tomatoes. Consider a whole wheat crust for added benefits.

- Chinese Cuisine: Choose steamed tofu and vegetables over fried meats. Request brown rice instead of white for better nutrition.

- Pantry Staples: Keep canned beans handy. They’re perfect for soups, salads, or pasta sauces for a quick fiber boost.

- Fruit Choices: Instead of fruit juice, drink water to quench your thirst and enjoy whole fruit for extra fiber and satisfaction.

- Supplement Smart: Try a fiber supplement like Fibersure. Made by the creators of Metamucil, this all-natural, flavor-free powder dissolves quickly in water or most liquids, adding five grams of fiber per teaspoon without affecting taste or texture. Add it to salad dressings, stir-fries, or even a glass of water.

Improving your eating habits doesn't have to be difficult. With these simple changes, you can make a significant impact on your health without compromising on taste or convenience.
