Despite their size and influence, the world’s top 25 food companies are failing to effectively tackle the global diet crisis. According to a new study, these companies often only make changes when faced with negative publicity that threatens their profits.
Major industry players like Wal-Mart, McDonald's, Coca-Cola, and Cadbury have been criticized for their insufficient efforts to meet the World Health Organization (WHO) targets set in 2004. These targets are aimed at combating obesity, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes through better dietary practices.
The study evaluated the companies based on responsible marketing practices, especially towards children, as well as efforts to reduce fat, sugar, and salt in their products, manage portion sizes, and develop healthier offerings. Alarmingly, only four companies have taken steps to reduce the fat content in their products, five are cutting sugar, and ten are reducing salt.
The comprehensive review included four British conglomerates and highlighted the lack of accountability these global giants have concerning the diet-related disease epidemic. Researchers from City University in London note that public pressure appears to be the only factor motivating action towards healthier practices.
With diseases like cancer, heart disease, and obesity accounting for 60% of global deaths?"a figure expected to rise to 73% by 2020?"the question remains: will these companies accept responsibility before the crisis escalates further? Their current lack of commitment to health initiatives paints a concerning picture, indicating that it might take more than criticism to prompt meaningful change.
