Article
Embarking on a journey to healthier eating is no small task, and the first step can often be the hardest: where do you begin? Identifying the right foods to include and those to avoid is essential before hitting the grocery store.
Our survival depends on nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and calories, which fall into two categories: macronutrients and micronutrients. Macronutrients provide calories and consist of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, while micronutrients are made up of vitamins and minerals.
There's a common misconception that all fats or carbohydrates are harmful, leaving protein as the only safe option. This would make our meals quite dull! Thankfully, not all fats and carbohydrates are detrimental.
Despite recent negative publicity, carbohydrates are vital, serving as our primary energy source. Our brain and muscles function optimally on them. Avoid depriving yourself of carbohydrates. Instead, steer clear of simple sugars found in candy, soda, and many snacks. Opt for complex carbohydrates such as whole grains and fruits to maintain steady energy levels throughout the day, avoiding sugar-induced highs and lows.
Fats also play a crucial role in our health. They help our bodies absorb certain vitamins and are integral to cell membranes and hormones. While it's wise to limit saturated fats found in meat, milk, and dairy products, incorporating healthy unsaturated fats from plant sources like nuts and olives is beneficial.
By making informed choices about macronutrients, you can enjoy a more balanced and satisfying diet.
