Overview
I'm Stephen Hill from Birmingham, England. My journey with stammering began when I was around four or five years old. My parents sought various speech therapy options for me, both in group settings and one-on-one sessions. The strategies I learned to manage or conquer my stammer were diverse, including:
- Slowing down my breath
- Costal breathing
- Prolonged speech
- Taking a deep breath before speaking
My Experience
I started my speech therapy journey as a "preschool stammerer," a term used by speech therapists to describe young children with this speech pattern. My parents were told that most children outgrow stammering, but I was not one of them.
As I aged, I progressed to the "childhood stammer" class, continuing with various speech therapy activities and games designed to help. Despite these efforts, I eventually moved into the "adult stammer" category and realized that traditional speech therapy wasn't effective for me.
Finding My Own Path
I decided to create my own self-help approach for managing my stammer. Interestingly, there were times when my speech was nearly fluent?"like when I was relaxed or, for instance, when I was drunk.
After nearly a year of dedicated self-help efforts, I managed to overcome my stammer entirely. This experience led me to a career where I now help others learn how to overcome stammering.
By sharing my story, I hope to inspire others who face similar challenges to explore the strategies that work best for them.
