What I Learned from Drug Rehabilitation
Navigating through one of the toughest yet most transformative periods of my life, I spent fourteen months in a drug rehabilitation center. This experience profoundly shaped my journey, and until now, I've never truly explored it through writing.
I never imagined that I'd spend over a year of my mid-twenties in rehab. My drug use began in junior high, largely due to peer pressure. Initially, I tried drugs with hesitation, but as I attended more parties, my fear diminished?"this loss of fear became my greatest downfall in the struggle with addiction.
Throughout high school and university, my addiction worsened. I mistakenly believed I was hiding it well until one Christmas break when my parents noticed all the signs. They were supportive and not to blame for my addiction or my eventual decision to seek rehabilitation.
After that Christmas, my addiction spiraled so much that I willingly agreed to enter rehab. Unlike many who resist the idea, I knew I needed help, realizing that without intervention, drugs might destroy me.
During my fourteen months in rehabilitation, I discovered more about myself and life than I had ever anticipated. I learned to recognize my worth as a person and a man for the first time. Rehab taught me that drugs, like food, exercise, or alcohol, often fill an emotional void. I realized the immense responsibility I have for my own life and health.
Talking openly about my rehabilitation journey has been healing. Reflecting on past mistakes with honesty and moving towards the future with hope has been incredibly liberating.
