Spinal Cord Injury: Life After
Summary:
Is this about death? No, it’s about living after a spinal cord injury. The title may suggest otherwise because, for many, the initial reaction to hearing about paralysis or the use of a wheelchair is to question the point of living. Why was I spared?
That was my immediate thought once I grasped my new reality. Waking up from a three-day coma with a breathing tube being removed, I learned I’d had an accident.
Hours later, I began to understand the gravity of my situation from the somber expression of my doctor. My spine was broken in three places; bone fragments severed my spinal cord, and I would never walk again. That’s when I first wished for my own death.
Fast-forward twenty-two years. I’ve spent over two decades using a wheelchair for mobility?"my "afterlife." My spinal cord remains severed, and I’m paralyzed from the chest down (T-4, to be precise). I own several wheelchairs: for basketball, tennis, and daily use. I’ve probably gone through nearly ten wheelchairs, along with countless catheters, medications, and supplies, all because of one moment?"a car accident that changed everything.
Would it have been better to experience the final afterlife instead of this one? I can't say for sure since I haven't compared the two. But I can assure you that life, even after a spinal cord injury, can be rewarding and fulfilling if you choose to make it so.
