Natural Relief for Arthritis and Joint Pain
Introduction
Years of teaching high-impact aerobics have taken a toll on my knees. While it's been excellent for cardiovascular health, my knees have started making unsettling noises, often referred to as "creep" and "crepitus" by my physical therapist friends. The grinding sounds were so loud they could be heard without effort. Faced with the prospect of a knee replacement by 40, I decided to make some changes, starting with regular leg extensions and glucosamine supplements.
What is Glucosamine?
Glucosamine is a natural component of cartilage known to stimulate connective tissue production. As an amino sugar, it doesn't provide energy but instead contributes to forming tendons, ligaments, bones, skin, nails, eyes, and heart valves.
Benefits of Glucosamine
Glucosamine supplements are renowned for supporting tendons and ligaments, building joint cartilage, and reducing its destruction. They have also shown promise in alleviating inflammation from conditions like asthma and bursitis and reducing the occurrence of food allergies, tendonitis, and skin issues. Most notably, glucosamine is effective in relieving symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
How Does Glucosamine Work?
As we age, our glucosamine production decreases, leading to reduced water retention in cartilage. This fluid provides cushioning to joints and tissues, and its depletion can result in joint pain and arthritis. Glucosamine, often paired with chondroitin, helps counteract this water loss and restore cartilage.
Possible Side Effects
While glucosamine and chondroitin are naturally occurring, they work differently from synthetic drugs like Prednisone or anti-inflammatories such as Naproxen. It may take up to a year of regular use to notice improvements in joint health. However, half of all regular users report significant reductions in joint pain. Occasionally, users may experience nausea and heartburn, but these can be mitigated by taking supplements with meals.
How to Use Glucosamine
To minimize side effects, take the glucosamine/chondroitin complex with meals. I take one 500 mg tablet daily. Dr. Earl Mindell recommends starting with 1-3 tablets of 500 mg daily for three weeks to boost effects, then reducing to one tablet daily.
Important Note
Always consult your healthcare provider before beginning any supplementation, especially if taking other medications, to avoid interactions. Even though these supplements are naturally derived, they are powerful and should be used with care. Continue to educate yourself with reliable resources.
