Mixing Pain Medicines: A Risk to Your Stomach

As people age, many start taking aspirin to prevent heart attacks and strokes. However, a recent study highlights the dangers of mixing aspirin with common pain relievers, which can harm the stomach.

The research, examining health records of nearly 50,000 individuals using over-the-counter (OTC) ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen (Aleve), showed alarming results. These drugs, called non-specific nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ns-NSAIDs), increase the risk of stomach issues when combined with aspirin. Specifically, the risk of stomach bleeding and ulcers doubles with naproxen and triples with ibuprofen when taken alongside aspirin.

Dr. Joseph Biskupiak, who led the study at the University of Utah College of Pharmacy, warned, "Aspirin raises the risk for stomach problems. While you can buy these OTC drugs easily, they aren't without risks."

The study also underscored the dangers of using ns-NSAIDs on their own. Annually, more than 100,000 hospitalizations and thousands of deaths are linked to stomach issues caused by these drugs. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has requested drug manufacturers to enhance warnings about serious stomach problems, skin reactions, and potential heart risks on product labels. It’s advised not to use OTC NSAIDs for more than 10 days without consulting a doctor.

"Many people underestimate OTC medicines," Biskupiak noted. "While beneficial, they come with risks. It’s crucial to read the labels carefully and reconsider combining them with aspirin. Always talk to a doctor to find the right pain relief option."

Approximately 31 million adults in the U.S. rely on OTC pain medication daily, emphasizing the importance of awareness around their safe use.
