Colds are one of the most common viral afflictions affecting people today. If you're over ten years old and have never had a cold, consider yourself extremely lucky. Most people experience colds once or more annually, and since there is no cure, remedies have become a booming industry worldwide.
You've likely noticed entire shelves in supermarkets and pharmacies dedicated to cold remedies. These products typically target specific symptoms, as each cold virus is unique, making a universal cure impossible. Common symptoms include coughs, sore throats, sinus congestion, watery eyes, dry eyes, runny nose, and headaches.
While some cold remedies can be quite effective, none will make you feel completely better. It’s irritating to see commercials where someone bedridden with a cold suddenly bounces back to full health after taking a pill. Even the best medication can only make you feel a bit less miserable.
Though it’s challenging to entirely relieve cold symptoms, I've found some remedies that help reduce the virus's duration. Doctors commonly advise staying hydrated, which is very helpful. Additionally, zinc lozenges have proven to be an excellent remedy. They may not taste great and can leave a strange aftertaste, but my colds tend to disappear faster when I use them. Even better, if I start with zinc lozenges right after noticing symptoms, the cold doesn't seem to hit as hard.
Recent research supports zinc as a proven cold remedy. While zinc tablets don’t seem to be effective for me, the lozenges work wonders. My preferred brand is Cold-Eeze, which has managed to make them fairly palatable. If you've been exposed to someone who's sick, taking zinc lozenges might help prevent a cold as well.
