Canada vs. Medicare: Which is More Affordable?
When it comes to saving on medication costs, is it better to purchase from Canada or enroll in the new Medicare Part D? Surprisingly, the results showed Medicare Part D often offers better savings.
I compared prices by entering medication details for five different patients on the Medicare website and several Canadian online pharmacies. Out of these five cases, Medicare came out cheaper for four patients. Each patient had varying numbers of prescriptions: one, two, four, six, and eight. Canadian options included shipping fees, whereas Medicare plans required co-pays, deductibles, and monthly premiums. I always selected the most affordable plan available.
Remarkably, the fourth patient, who required six medications, could save around $1,400 in 2006 by opting for Medicare Part D instead of buying from Canada. The only exception was the patient with a single prescription. The reason mainly involves the deductibles and premiums. It highlights a key point: if your annual prescription costs are under $810, enrolling in Medicare Part D might not be cost-effective.
