A Cure for Nearsightedness: Radial Keratotomy
Radial keratotomy (RK) is a surgical procedure designed to correct myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness. Discovered inadvertently by Dr. Svyatoslav Fyodorov, RK's origins trace back to an unusual incident. Dr. Fyodorov treated a boy who had been in a bicycle accident, where broken glass from his eyeglasses became lodged in his eyes. To remove the glass, several radial incisions were made in the cornea, and upon healing, the boy's vision notably improved.
In radial keratotomy, a precision diamond knife is used to make micro-fine incisions in the cornea's outer layer. A local anesthetic is administered since the incisions are superficial, making the procedure relatively painless. Before surgery, the patient's corneal thickness is carefully measured, and the surgical instrument is precisely set under an operating microscope. These incisions flatten the cornea's curvature, effectively correcting nearsightedness.
Introduced in the United States in the 1980s, RK was initially regarded as an experimental procedure. Surgeons would operate on one eye and wait three months before proceeding with the other, monitoring the outcomes carefully. However, as medical professionals gained experience, simultaneously operating on both eyes became feasible. Today, RK is a minor procedure, typically taking 15 to 20 minutes per eye.
While RK has benefited from advancements in technology and countless successful surgeries, it is not as precise as newer techniques like LASIK and PRK. Due to its unpredictability, only a few surgeons continue to perform RK today.
