Discover Your Hair Type

Summary:

Every day, you encounter people with diverse hair colors and styles. But did you know that your hair has a specific type? Indeed, not all hair is created equal.

Understanding Hair Structure:

1) The Follicle: Hair grows from a long, bulbous follicle. If you pull out a strand, you can see the bulge at its end. Rapid cell division at the follicle's base promotes hair growth.

2) Layers of Hair:
- Medulla: The innermost layer, present in thick hair.
- Cortex: The middle layer, responsible for your hair's strength, color, and texture.
- Cuticle: The outer layer, protecting the cortex and completely colorless.

3) Composition: Hair is primarily composed of a protein called keratin.

Types of Hair:

1) Terminal Hair: Thick, long hair found on the head, armpits, pubic area, and (for men) the face and chest.

2) Vellus Hair: Soft, short hair that covers the rest of the body.

Hair Type and Geography:

1) Asian Descent: Hair strands are typically round and thicker, except for redheads who have the thickest hair overall.

2) European Descent: Blonde or dark hair with round to oval-shaped strands that are usually thinner.

3) African Descent: Flat hair strands which contribute to frizziness and curls.

The combination of different genetic backgrounds can result in unique hair types. For instance, a mix of Asian and African genes, or Caucasian and African genes, can create interesting variations. Personally, I have blonde, curly, frizzy hair, a result of my Dutch heritage mixed with African ancestry.

Understanding your hair type can be fascinating. By researching your family tree, you can discover the origins of your unique hair characteristics.
