Make Fitness Fun: How to Stick with Your Workout

Summary:

Discover how to make your fitness routine enjoyable with insights from fitness guru Anna Fleet.

Exercise is undeniably beneficial, yet many people abandon their fitness plans within a month. It's common for North Americans to start and stop workouts more frequently than they replace their socks.

The high cost of gym memberships and equipment can be daunting, especially when they end up unused. Often, that pricey treadmill turns into nothing more than a fancy clothes rack.

As a certified personal trainer, I quickly realized that the secret to sustaining a fitness routine is making it enjoyable. Exercise shouldn't feel like a boring obligation but rather a fun part of your day.

Many new clients associate fitness with boredom, fearing it will erode their social lives. We juggle so many priorities?"work, family, social events?"that exercise often becomes an afterthought. If workouts feel like just another chore, it’s unlikely you'll stick with them. That's why I recommend swapping the term “exercise” with “leisure activity.” Plan it like a social outing; invite friends to a spin class or a power walk.

On average, people devote about an hour, four times a week to fitness. It needs to be enjoyable, or people will avoid it. Fortunately, entertaining workouts are gaining popularity. Dance-inspired options like belly dancing, salsa, and even pole dancing are all the rage.

I recently tried a pole-dancing cardio workout with friends, and it was a blast. Not only did I get a great workout, but the laughter worked my abs too. Pole dancing, though challenging, strengthens the upper body, and swinging around provides good cardio. The cardio strip segment was intense, combining exotic dance moves with exercises that target muscles you didn’t even know you had.

Fitness can and should be fun. Check out local community centers and gyms for activities you enjoy. Consider tango lessons with your partner, mother/baby yoga classes, or high-energy cardio kickboxing with a friend, followed by a healthy lunch. By transforming everyday activities into something enjoyable, you'll achieve both a social outing and a workout!
