Article Body:
First, there was my brother Bobby, the extrovert who never met a stranger. Much like our father, Bobby loved making people laugh and was liked by everyone. We grew up in poverty, but Bobby's charm often had people buying him things. Unfortunately, he also inherited our father's struggle with alcoholism. Bobby faced legal troubles for DUI and marijuana possession but was genuinely trying to turn his life around. He enrolled in a technical college, studying auto body repair, where he felt hopeful and applied himself diligently.
A visit back to his old hometown led him to relapse, resulting in another marijuana possession charge. Despite a letter from his school supporting him, the judge was unsympathetic, preferring Bobby to stay in town. Our mother hesitated when asked if he could live with her, leaving Bobby in jail. It was a pivotal moment in his life, a moment where everything began to unravel. Upon his release, while coming to live with me, Bobby was tragically killed by a train. He was intoxicated. As we prepared for his funeral, I couldn't help but wonder where all these people offering condolences were when he was alive. My mother loved Bobby deeply, as he was the only one who could make her laugh, and she hasn’t laughed much since his passing over 20 years ago.
Then came Randy, a kind, gentle soul who never intentionally hurt anyone but himself. At ten, he accidentally damaged his voice box in a go-kart mishap. Despite this, he used his voice to make a living, first at McDonald's and later in customer service for a major electronics firm. He aspired to be a registered nurse and graduated with top honors, but soon after, he was diagnosed with full-blown AIDS. He couldn’t tolerate the antiretroviral drugs and stopped taking them. His decline was painful, and when he passed in the hospital, I knew he was at peace. Randy joked about his condition, suggesting that Oprah should feature him and our brother Clay, given their uncommon situation.
Clay, who shared Randy's path to Los Angeles seeking acceptance, was a fighter. He was known for his fiery spirit. Remarkably, he was once highlighted as one of the longest-surviving individuals with full-blown AIDS. He outlived many friends and his beloved partner but maintained a positive outlook, humorously naming his dwindling T-cells at one point.
Why share this painful history? Not to evoke sadness, but to encourage those brave enough to seek truth. Many may shy away after Bobby’s story, reluctant to confront realities of death and AIDS. This silence contributes to misunderstanding and hinders progress. Misguided comments, like those from my former pastor, who once quipped "God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve," only deepen wounds. This drove me to leave my church after expressing my pain.
My brothers had their relationship with God; none of us are perfect. Judgment based on fear or misunderstanding only fosters division. We must strive for empathy, understanding, and love. Remember, diseases like AIDS or alcoholism can touch any of us or those we love. Let’s choose compassion over judgment, and love over fear.
