Summary
Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD) is a deadly condition severely impacting the Tasmanian devil population. It starts as small lesions around the mouth and progresses to large tumors, mostly on the face and neck. Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD) poses a significant threat to Tasmanian devils, affecting a large portion of their population. Initially emerging as small lumps or lesions around the mouth, it quickly develops into large tumors on the face and neck, and occasionally elsewhere on the body.Since its first report in the mid-1990s, DFTD has been confirmed in most regions of Tasmania, sparing only the north-west and west coast populations. It predominantly affects areas with high-density devil populations, primarily impacting adult devils. The disease typically becomes noticeable when devils are at least two years old. As the cancer grows, it impairs the devil’s ability to eat, weakening them and reducing their ability to compete for food. Animals often die within three to five months from the appearance of lesions due to starvation and organ failure.
There are three main types of malignant skin tumors, influenced heavily by ultraviolet radiation. Basal cell carcinoma, or basaloma, is the most common and the least invasive, though it can aggressively recur and destroy underlying tissues, leading to significant cosmetic and functional issues.
The facial tumor disease continues to devastate Tasmania’s wild devil population, with nearly half believed to have succumbed to it. The disease's spread has been confirmed with three new cases in southern Tasmania.
Malignant melanoma is currently seeing the biggest increase in incidence. It spreads through lymphatic and blood pathways and has a poor prognosis if not detected early. While usually pigmented, amelanotic melanomas, lacking the typical blue or brown color, can also occur.
Currently, the disease has spread to 65% of the state, reaching the eastern regions and stretching as far west as Cradle Valley and into the south. The disease is most impactful in these eastern areas, as it hasn't been recorded on the west coast or far north-west.
By addressing the spread and impact of DFTD, efforts can be concentrated on protecting and preserving these iconic creatures in the affected regions.
