Parkinson’s Disease: An Overview
Summary:
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting the substantia nigra, first recognized by British physician Dr. James Parkinson in 1817. While significant biochemical changes in the brains of PD patients were identified in the 1960s, many genetic factors remain elusive. PD is characterized as a progressive movement disorder.
Article Body:
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative condition that impacts the substantia nigra in the brain. It was first identified in 1817 by Dr. James Parkinson. It wasn't until the 1960s that we began to understand the biochemical changes in the brains of those with the disease. Although numerous genes linked to PD have been discovered, many remain unknown.
PD is a progressive movement disorder affecting the extrapyramidal system, which is responsible for coordinating communication between brain neurons and the body’s muscles?"a crucial function. The disorder often coincides with depression and sensory disturbances due to brain damage. In the United States, approximately 1 in 600 people have Parkinson’s, with risk increasing significantly after age 55.
The exact cause of Parkinson’s is still unknown. Researchers have identified nine genetic defects linked to PD, but these occur in only a few families with unusually high rates of the disease, making widespread genetic conclusions challenging. Though strong genetic inheritance is rare, individuals with PD are 3 to 4 times more likely to have a close relative with the condition.
The leading theory suggests that Parkinson’s results from a combination of genetic vulnerability to environmental toxins and actual exposure to those toxins. Pesticides and industrial metals are the primary suspects.
While we don’t yet have all the answers, advancements in science and technology promise to enhance our understanding of Parkinson’s disease and other similar conditions in the future.
