Unaddressed Kidney Disease Risk Factors in the U.S.

A recent report from the National Kidney Foundation's Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP) highlights a concerning issue: significant risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) are not being adequately addressed in the United States.

The report analyzed health data from 37,000 individuals at risk for kidney disease, including those with diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of the condition. Alarmingly, while half of these participants were found to have CKD, only two percent were aware of it. Many with CKD also cope with other serious health issues like obesity and anemia.

Dr. Allan Collins, president-elect of the NKF and director of the KEEP Data Coordinating Center, emphasized the importance of awareness and screening. "Understanding risk factors and the need for screening is crucial for early detection and prevention of kidney disease," he noted.

Despite the fact that 90% of KEEP participants had visited their doctors in the past year, most were unaware of their potential CKD risk. This highlights a critical gap in patient education and care.

The NKF stresses the importance of proper screening. Nearly half of KEEP participants tested positive for microalbuminuria, an early indicator of kidney disease. Fortunately, the program is making a positive impact. Roughly 60% of participants provide follow-up information after screening, with many consulting their doctors about issues like elevated blood pressure and anemia.

Dr. Marsha Wolfson, senior medical director at Ortho Biotech Clinical Affairs, which primarily sponsors KEEP, stated, "We're committed to working with partners to reach communities affected by CKD. The KEEP program is essential in raising awareness and promoting early detection."

Dr. Laura A. Williams from Abbott, an associate sponsor of KEEP, added, "CKD isn't just a kidney issue. Damaged kidneys affect the entire body. Early diagnosis can prevent further harm to vital organs, especially the heart and bones."

These insights underscore the pressing need for increased awareness and proactive health management to combat CKD and its related health challenges.
