I Am Hepatitis C

Introducing Hepatitis C

I am Hepatitis C, a virus that causes liver inflammation, commonly known as HCV. Before my discovery in 1989, I was humorously lumped together with my "non-A-non-B hepatitis" siblings. However, my reputation changed significantly that year.

Immunity and Infection

About 15 to 20 percent of people can fight me off and develop immunity. However, another 15 to 20 percent will show acute symptoms. For every 100 people with chronic Hepatitis C, about 20 will develop liver cirrhosis?"a severe liver scarring that can lead to cancer.

Global Impact

I have infected over 180 million people worldwide and am a leading cause of liver transplants and liver cancer. I am also a major reason for deaths among those co-infected with HIV.

Symptoms and Progression

Most chronic carriers of Hepatitis C show no symptoms. Unfortunately for me, this means my presence often goes unnoticed until significant liver damage occurs, which might take 10 to 40 years.

My symptoms, when they do appear, can mimic the flu and include:
- Body aches
- Loss of appetite
- Headaches
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Night sweats
- Abdominal pain
- Pain in the upper right abdomen

These mild symptoms often delay diagnosis until blood work during routine check-ups or blood donations reveals my presence.

Spread and Transmission

I spread mainly through blood-to-blood contact. Sharing needles, unprotected sex, and unsanitary tattoos or piercings are some of my favorite transmission methods. Whenever there is blood-to-blood contact, there’s a chance for me to spread.

Stay informed and cautious to keep me at bay.
