A Wake-Up Call From The Heart
A Second Chance for Heart Attack Survivors
In a life-altering moment, Frank Rella, a high school music teacher, faced a wake-up call that transformed his life. Experiencing chest pain, Frank left work early only to find himself in a dire situation as the pain intensified at home. An ambulance rushed him to the hospital, where his greatest fear was confirmed: a heart attack.
"My heart attack was truly a wake-up call," said Frank, a 42-year-old from New Jersey. This pivotal experience led him to become a paramedic, placing him at the forefront of medical care. "I went through a whirlwind of emotions and feared having a second attack. Now, I ensure I take the right medications and collaborate with my doctor to lead a heart-healthy lifestyle."
Frank’s story is far from unique. A recent survey of over 500 heart attack survivors reveals that many perceive their experience as a second chance at life. However, a majority also reported feelings of depression and hopelessness. They expressed that the fear of another heart attack loomed larger than the fear of death itself. Alarmingly, 40% of those surveyed admitted they were not doing everything possible to prevent another attack. This is concerning, especially since statistics show that one in five men and one in three women will suffer another heart attack within six years.
Dr. William Abraham, director of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at The Ohio State University Medical Center, commented, "I witness these survey results daily. Many of my patients, aware of their heightened risk, still aren't taking all necessary steps to live a heart-healthy life. The silver lining is that by taking certain measures?"eating healthy, exercising, and adhering to prescribed medications like beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, statins, and aspirin?"they can prevent another attack."
The survey found that 80% of heart attack survivors felt they needed more information about heart health. In response, Mended Hearts, a nationwide support group affiliated with the American Heart Association, launched the "Heartfelt Wake-Up Call" program. This initiative provides education and support for heart attack survivors and their loved ones. The program is funded with assistance from GlaxoSmithKline. "I encourage patients to take their health to heart," emphasized Dr. Abraham.
This initiative is a reminder of the importance of proactive health management and the power of community support in heart attack recovery.
