Aortic Dissection: Are You At Risk?
Summary:
Aortic dissections are often mistaken for less serious conditions, even in emergency settings. Awareness of risk factors and prevention measures is essential to avoid tragedy.
Chest pain can vary significantly. While some may attribute mild discomfort to heartburn or stress, severe pain might indicate a life-threatening aortic dissection?"a tear in the large artery near the heart.
Often confused with less critical issues, aortic dissections demand immediate medical attention due to the risk of massive internal bleeding and death. Annually, there are about 5,000 to 10,000 cases. The primary symptom is typically severe, tearing pain in the chest or lower back, but other signs include rapid pulse, sweating, nausea, weak or absent pulse, and decreased limb sensation.
Certain groups are at higher risk for aortic dissection, including those with hypertension, Turner syndrome, and a family history of aortic disease. In particular, individuals with Marfan syndrome face up to a 250-fold increased risk due to fragile connective tissue. Alarmingly, many with Marfan syndrome remain undiagnosed, unaware of their potential risk for sudden death from aortic dissection.
The National Marfan Foundation (NMF) recommends evaluation for those exhibiting signs of the disorder, such as tall stature with disproportionately long limbs, indented or protruding chest bones, flat feet, elongated fingers and toes, and vision issues. Medications, surgery, and lifestyle changes can help prevent a dissection.
Dr. Diane Sixsmith, Chair of Emergency Medicine at New York Hospital, Queens, emphasizes the importance of vigilance for those at risk. "Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for survival," she states. "If you belong to a high-risk group, particularly with Marfan syndrome, be proactive. Regular echocardiograms and medications to slow the heart rate significantly improve outcomes, and preventive surgery has a success rate exceeding 98%."
Knowing your risk factors and pursuing regular check-ups can be life-saving. Don’t wait for a tragedy to take action.
