Allergies: The Sneezing Sickness
Introduction
Allergies, commonly known as "hay fever," affect millions of people worldwide. Here, I share my personal experience with allergies caused by dust and sawdust.
My Journey with Allergies
My struggle with allergies began shortly after graduating from high school. I moved with my mother into a small cottage, and soon after, I started experiencing relentless sneezing fits, a runny nose, itchy eyes, and congestion. These symptoms became so severe that I consulted our local doctor. He diagnosed me with an allergy to dust and fine particles. Instead of prescribing medication, he advised me to minimize dust exposure at home.
Managing Allergies at Home
To tackle the dust, I took on a vigorous cleaning routine, vacuuming, and tidying up regularly. However, this approach offered little relief. During intense allergy attacks, I resorted to over-the-counter medication, Dimetapp, which alleviated the symptoms but made me drowsy.
One potential trigger could have been my mother's habit of shaking out the bed linens before making the bed. This action likely released dust and lint, worsening my condition.
Allergies at Work
When I moved to a new job location, my symptoms improved, except around chainsaws. The sawdust from cutting wood triggered the same symptoms as before. This made me realize that fine particles, similar to dust at home, were also a problem.
Understanding the Cause
Contrary to popular belief, it's not the dust itself that causes allergy symptoms. It's thought that dust mites living on dust grains are the culprits. These mites produce waste containing proteins that, when inhaled or in contact with the skin, trigger an immune response. This response releases histamine, leading to sneezing and congestion.
A Hereditary Condition
Allergies often have a hereditary component. Since my mother also suffered from allergies, it seems I inherited this predisposition.
Avoidance: The Best Strategy
Despite understanding the role of dust mites, I'm still puzzled by my reaction to sawdust. Exposure to fine wood particles reliably triggers my symptoms. Consequently, working in environments like sawmills or plywood plants is not an option for me.
By avoiding areas with dust and sawdust, my symptoms have nearly vanished. This lifestyle adjustment has greatly improved my quality of life.
