Climbing Out of Depression

Raising Global Awareness Through Mountain Climbing

Mountain climber Joe Lawson is on a mission to raise global awareness about depression by scaling the tallest peaks on each continent.

Twenty years after his father's tragic suicide, Lawson launched Expedition Hope to shine a light on the dangers of untreated depression. His father wrestled with depression for most of his life, ultimately ending his own suffering when Joe was just 16. In the aftermath, Lawson found solace and inspiration in mountain climbing, setting out on a journey to conquer the highest mountains on all seven continents.

Depression affects up to 19 million Americans, yet it often goes undiagnosed or inadequately treated, especially in primary-care settings. Many patients focus on physical rather than emotional symptoms, leading to misdiagnosis. A study revealed that around 70 percent of those with major depressive disorder (MDD) reported only physical complaints, which can include headaches, and back, shoulder, and abdominal pain affecting 45 to 75 percent of patients.

"My father's depression made him feel isolated and estranged, preventing him from seeking help," Lawson explained. "With the right treatment, his life might have been saved."

With support from Eli Lilly and Company, Lawson started his journey in May, climbing Alaska's Mt. McKinley, North America's highest peak. Despite a knee injury forcing him to withdraw, he resiliently continued, summiting Africa's Mt. Kilimanjaro in September 2005 and Australia's Mt. Kosciusko in November 2005.

"Like mountain climbing, those battling depression face daunting challenges, but support and treatment can lead to relief," Lawson stated.

This year, Lawson plans to tackle Russia's Mt. Elbrus and Antarctica's Mt. Vinson Massif, continuing his quest to bring hope and awareness to those struggling with depression.
