Assessing Your Health: The Crucial Role of Sleep
If counting sheep isn’t helping, consider this: chronic sleep deprivation affects much more than just your energy levels. It can have serious consequences for your health, safety, performance, and overall lifestyle.
Most are shocked to learn that getting less than six or seven hours of sleep per night can increase your risk of mortality more than smoking, high blood pressure, or heart disease.
Even losing just an hour and a half of sleep can reduce daytime alertness by up to 32%. This can impair your memory, thinking, and information processing abilities. Reduced alertness may limit your engagement in activities requiring sustained attention, like reading or watching TV. Moreover, the risk of workplace injuries more than doubles when you’re tired.
Drowsy driving is another concern. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that drowsy driving is responsible for at least 100,000 crashes, 71,000 injuries, and 1,550 deaths each year.
Around 70 million Americans face sleep disturbances, such as difficulty falling asleep, inadequate sleep duration, and frequent awakenings. These issues might indicate broader problems, especially when linked to irritability or mood swings. Symptoms like emotional stress or restlessness could hint at conditions like bipolar disorder.
“If someone experiences restlessness, irritability, and emotional ups and downs for more than two weeks,” says Dr. Ellen Frank, a professor of psychiatry and psychology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, “they should seek medical attention to rule out depression or bipolar disorder.”
The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) has launched a website, www.sleeplessinamerica.org, offering educational resources, screenings for sleep issues, guidance on when to consult a doctor, and a questionnaire to determine if sleeplessness could indicate a more serious condition. The site is also available in Spanish.
Prioritize your sleep?"it might be more vital to your health than you realize.
