Helping Students Survive Sudden Cardiac Arrest
At any given moment, countless students across the nation are engaged in school sports or physical activities?"be it a basketball game, soccer match, football practice, cheerleading, or gym class. But what happens if one of them experiences a life-threatening cardiac emergency? Is your school ready to respond?
Sudden cardiac arrest impacts over 340,000 Americans annually, including children and teens, often striking without warning. These heart conditions frequently remain undetected until a person is active. When cardiac arrest occurs, swift action and the immediate use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) are crucial for increasing survival rates.
The American Heart Association highlights that early use of AEDs?"portable devices that assess heart rhythm and deliver electric shocks to stabilize heartbeats?"can boost survival chances by 20% or more.
"Nearly 95% of cardiac arrest victims do not survive, typically because defibrillation happens too late," warns Dr. Vincent Mosesso Jr. of the National Center for Early Defibrillation at the University of Pittsburgh. "Every minute without treatment reduces survival chances by 10%. The best outcomes occur when CPR and defibrillation are administered within three minutes of the incident."
Unfortunately, many schools lack AEDs. To address this, Duracell and Zoll Medical Corp. have partnered to raise awareness among parents and educators about the critical need for preparedness.
"We aim to collaborate with communities nationwide to equip schools with the necessary tools to save lives," says Kara Salzillo, Duracell's manager of brand communications.
This initiative could make all the difference when every second counts.
