The Rise of Klondike
With the advent of computers in every household, solitaire quickly became a staple. Its simplicity made it addictive, but over time, players sought new challenges. Though it gained popularity in the late 1900s, Klondike's origins likely date back to miners in Alaska and California who used it to pass the time.
How to Play Klondike
Klondike is easy to learn but offers a challenging and engaging experience. Here's how to set it up:
1. Place one card face up on the table.
2. To its left, place six cards face down.
3. Add a face-up card to the second column from the left.
4. Continue adding face-up cards, followed by face-down cards, forming a staircase-like pattern. The last column should have seven cards in total.
5. Keep 24 cards in your hand for gameplay.
Objective
The goal is to move all cards to four foundation piles, starting with aces and building each suit up to kings. Whenever an ace appears, place it aside and continue stacking, e.g., from an ace to a two, and so on. Each foundation must be built entirely in the same suit.
Playing the Game
Create sequences on the tableau by placing cards in alternating colors, in descending order. For example, a six of clubs can be followed by a five of hearts or diamonds, but not by another club or spade.
Revealing Face-Down Cards
When you use all face-up cards in a column, flip the card underneath. If a tableau column becomes empty, you can initiate a new sequence by placing a king in the space.
Moving Sequences
You can shift sequences between tableau columns, as long as they follow the alternating-color descending order.
Using the Stockpile
Use the remaining 24 cards as a stockpile. Flip the top three cards and play with the topmost one. Once used, the card beneath becomes available. Keep revealing and recycling the stockpile until the game is complete.
