Fortunately, Master Blender David Stewart is pleased with Kininvie’s results, noting that it adds a fruity note to blends like the Family Reserve. Although it plays a role in the blend, its long-term impact on a 12-year-old blend remains to be seen.
Introducing Kininvie doesn’t mean an immediate removal of existing malts from blends. The process is gradual, involving constant adjustments to achieve the perfect balance of flavors. What remains consistent is Grant’s signature style: a blend of graceful, sweet, and complex elements, with the clean Girvan grain whisky as a foundation for rich malt interaction.
The core Dufftown malts are complemented by lighter varieties in blends like Clan McGregor and Family Reserve, while more robust malts such as Cragganmore, Highland Park, and The Macallan enhance older blends. According to Stewart, “There may be more malt in the older blends, but don’t underestimate the grain. It adds its own flavor dimension.”
A Legacy in Whisky
Grant’s history is rich with tradition. The family established the Glenfiddich distillery three years prior to launching their blend, originally named Standfast, and now known as Family Reserve.

The Family Reserve offers a fragrant nose with hints of honey, lime blossom, pear, and light smoke. It begins with a soft toffee and vanilla flavor, transitioning to a subtle play between malt and grain, and finishes with a crisp, nutty note.
