Glen Garioch: A Revival in the Heart of Aberdeenshire
Despite being one of Scotland's most fertile regions, Aberdeenshire is home to few distilleries. In 1995, the closure of Glen Garioch in Oldmeldrum seemed imminent when Morrison Bowmore (MBD) decided to mothball it. However, to everyone's surprise, the distillery reopened two years later, just in time to celebrate its 200th anniversary. This marked the beginning of a new era, with Fraser Hughes stepping into his first managerial role.
Fraser has been pivotal in transforming Glen Garioch’s style. Previously known for its peaty character, the distillery now produces unpeated malt. A new yeast strain and a refined distillation process have resulted in a beautifully sweet and fragrant spirit. "Being part of such a significant transformation is a rare opportunity," says Fraser. "In ten years, this will be a standout whisky."
The distillery's malt barns, capable of producing three-quarters of its requirements, are also set for revival. Successful trials could soon see the delightful aroma of kilning malt wafting through the rejuvenated village. "Five of the original staff returned when we reopened, despite having new jobs elsewhere," Fraser notes. "Their loyalty is something we need to honor by crafting great whisky."
Since reopening, eleven jobs have been created, with the potential for more if the malt barns and warehouses see new life. This personal touch is crucial, Fraser believes. "Whisky making is not about automation; it’s about human skill. It’s the hands-on effort that truly creates whisky."
Having worked his way up from the ground floor, Fraser values the traditional methods. "Few get the chance to rise like I did, and it keeps you grounded," he reflects. Both Fraser and Glen Garioch are definitely ones to watch.
