Escape to Solitude
Discover a Hidden Escape
Have you ever felt the urge to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life? In the March/April 1978 issue of Mother Earth News, a fascinating story was published about a couple who did just that by purchasing McLeod's Island?"a 90-acre sanctuary off the coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.
A Self-Sustained Lifestyle
This couple embraced self-sufficiency on their island paradise, relying on a few animals and the land for most of their needs. However, island living wasn't without its challenges:
"The sea is aptly described as 'restless.' A serene, glassy bay can transform into a whirlwind of waves and currents in mere moments. We’ve witnessed the bay in which our island resides thaw and refreeze within a single December day.
Winters here are remarkably unpredictable. Take 1976, for example, when persistent spring-like thaws left our bay choked with slushy ice?"impossible to navigate by boat, yet perilous to traverse even for a fox. We were effectively marooned for three months, from January to March. Conversely, last winter's intense cold snap solidified the bay, allowing us to walk to the mainland for mail and supplies whenever we pleased."
The Allure of Remote Living
While modern technology now allows many of us the freedom to work remotely from anywhere, this couple didn’t have that luxury. Sadly, there is no recent information about them, leaving us to wonder where life’s tides might have carried them.
Life’s sacrifices vary in magnitude, and while buying an island might not be on everyone’s agenda, it’s a reminder of the allure and challenge of living off the grid.
