Barbecuing or grilling outdoors is a favorite activity for families during the summer, providing a fun way to enjoy meals together. This is supported by a survey from the Propane Education & Research Council. In fact, nearly two-thirds of Americans rank barbecues and cookouts as their preferred method of entertaining in the summer.

However, only one in three adults are well-versed in safe grilling practices. To help the 74 million "barbecue households" in the U.S. enjoy a safe and enjoyable summer, the propane industry has partnered with best-selling author and grilling expert Steven Raichlen to share the top ten tips for safe propane grilling:

1. When refilling, have the supplier inspect the cylinder for dents, damage, rust, or leaks.

2. After filling or exchanging, take the cylinder home immediately. Keep the vehicle ventilated, with the valve closed and capped.

3. Always store cylinders outdoors in an upright position. Avoid storing or transporting near high temperatures, including spare cylinders.

4. Never leave the grill unattended. Follow manufacturer instructions carefully and ensure the grill lid is open before lighting.

5. Before connecting or lighting, use a leak-detection solution to ensure connections are tight. Avoid using matches or lighters for this check.

6. If you suspect a gas leak, safely turn off the gas supply valve immediately and call the fire department.

7. Keep children away from the cylinder and grill.

8. Avoid smoking while handling a propane cylinder.

9. Never use accelerants like lighter fluid or gasoline on the grill.

10. When not in use, turn off grill burner controls and close the cylinder valve.

"Interest in grilling is skyrocketing," says Raichlen, author of The Barbecue Bible and the newly released Raichlen on Ribs. "With so many grillers around, it’s crucial that these safe grilling tips are shared and, most importantly, followed."
