My brother-in-law and I, both coaches, often delve into discussions about money?"not its dollar value, but its role as a core value. He often says, "Money might not be central for you, but try changing the world without it." Lately, this has really struck a chord with me.
Money often stands as a major barrier between you and living authentically. Recently, I conducted a "Motivation for Healthy Living" workshop for a corporate team of about 50 people. When I asked how many of them were up by 7 a.m. on weekdays, every hand went up. However, on weekends, only a quarter did. Their reason? "My job requires it so I can support my family in the lifestyle we want." When asked if they'd rise early without pay, the answer was a unanimous "no." The underlying core value was family, not money?"but creating that lifestyle without money is challenging.
It's unfortunate that many people rise early five days a week to do something they're not passionate about. Why? Exactly?"money. It’s crucial to be honest with ourselves about its role in our lives.
Here are some questions to consider:
1. What role does money currently play in my life? Does it provide security or pleasure?
2. How do my job choices depend on money? Is it too important? Not important enough?
3. How much time do I spend making and managing money? Should I spend more or less?
4. If money were no object, what would my life look like? What’s stopping me? Would more money help? Am I willing to make the effort? Would this conflict with other values like family?
5. Am I investing my money in what I truly value? If not, what’s hindering me? Do I have conflicting values, or am I not being truthful about them?
Over the past few months, I’ve had revelations about money's power and value in my life because I got honest with myself. I eliminated thoughts that aspiring for a certain lifestyle for my family was shallow. Adopting our children from China required money. Our dreams of helping other children do too.
As 1 Timothy 6:10 states, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil." It's not that I love money, but I do want to change the world.
